Begay Jr., John

John Begay Jr. – Silversmith: The son of Navajo migrant workers, John Begay Jr.’s upbringing was anything but traditional. He was born in Phoenix and lived there until age twelve, when his family moved back to Shiprock, New Mexico. He learned silversmithing from his parents and an uncle, but much of his time was spent training himself in the basics of the craft.

During his childhood in Phoenix, his family members were devout Christians, and upon his return to the reservation John began to study traditional Navajo religion. He is one of the many Navajo people who comfortably combine both faiths, and he prays in both religions.

Early in his career, John demonstrated a sophistication that is unusual for native silversmiths. He combines classic and contemporary design with rococo stylings. His trademark use of thin twisted sterling silver wire into elaborate patterns is reminiscent of Moorish art. John Begay Jr. has been a major player in the contemporary jewelry world for several decades and has won top prizes in every important Native American show and exhibition.

While he works, John recites Navajo prayers. He says he prays his work will go well. He asks for blessings on those who display his work, and especially on the purchasers of his jewelry. He hopes they will be pleased and satisfied while wearing his creations. John Begay does not mass-produce jewelry, and puts skill and spirit into each individual piece.
