Coyote tales are a mainstay of Navajo winter stories. Coyote, the trickster, is responsible for bringing disorder to Navajo lives. In the end, however, something good always comes from his involvement. As with this basket, sometimes it is the constellations, the Milky Way and/or starry nights. Sometimes, however, it is greater knowledge and wisdom. At times, however, it is just a good story. Lorraine Black, daughter of legendary Navajo weaver Mary Holiday Black, always has great basketry and an imaginative narrative to go with it.
Inspired by dreams, Lorraine Black's skills have literally elevated basket weaving to new dimensions. Famous for her Horned Toad story basket, a three-dimensional piece that won first place in the Navajo Show at The Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, as well as an award at the Gallup Ceremonials, Lorraine's work is distinctively original.
